Mahama Urges Global Action on Gender Equality

President John Dramani Mahama has called on world leaders and development partners to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive, transformative steps to promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Addressing the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on Monday, October 13, President Mahama emphasized the need for governments to turn their commitments into real, impactful actions — especially for women and girls across Africa.

“The African woman remains particularly vulnerable. I urge my fellow African leaders to prioritize the welfare and empowerment of our women,” he stated.

He highlighted that gender equality is not only a matter of fairness but a powerful catalyst for sustainable development. “When women succeed, families flourish, communities grow stronger, and nations advance,” the President added.

Citing Ghana’s own progress, Mahama stressed that investing in women delivers tangible results in productivity, innovation, and social cohesion.

“As we reflect on the Beijing anniversary, I urge all governments and partners to go beyond symbolic gestures and commit to real, lasting change,” he said, calling for the moment to become a global turning point in the fight for equality.

He concluded with a call for united global action to make the coming decade one of bold progress and shared prosperity for women and girls everywhere.
