President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government plans to recruit 16,000 trained teachers in 2026, subject to the securing of the necessary financial clearance.

According to the Ghana News Agency, the President made the announcement while inspecting a newly completed 1,500-seat multipurpose assembly hall at the Peki College of Education during his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region.

Mr Mahama said the recruitment process would begin immediately after clearance had been obtained. He added that other trained teachers who remain without postings would be recruited gradually as resources become available.

The President linked the planned exercise to efforts to reduce graduate unemployment and ensure schools have enough qualified teachers to support teaching and learning. He said investment in teacher education was important to developing the skilled workforce needed for national development.

He also commended the management of Peki College of Education for its contribution to teacher training and said the government would continue to support improvements in infrastructure and education quality at the institution.

Teacher accommodation proposal

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the government also intended to construct about 50,000 teachers’ bungalows across the country. He said the proposed housing programme was aimed particularly at easing accommodation difficulties for teachers assigned to rural and underserved communities.

Mr Iddrisu said inadequate housing affects the deployment and retention of teachers in deprived areas. The planned bungalows, he said, form part of a wider approach focused on teacher welfare, motivation and creating conditions for effective teaching and learning.

The President’s visit to the Volta Region included inspections and commissioning of development projects, as well as engagements on programmes under the government’s Resetting Ghana Agenda.
