Residents of Kwabenya, Ayim, and Brekuso staged a protest today to express their frustration over the deteriorating state of roads in their communities.
Wearing red T-shirts, the demonstrators — comprising residents’ associations, fitness clubs, driver unions, farmers, traders, and the Concerned Citizens Association — gathered at the Ashesi University Junction as early as 6 a.m. The protest lasted for about two hours.
In an interview with Adom News, the Apesemaka Hene of Brekuso, Nana Odei Leebi II, revealed that First Sky Construction Company was awarded a contract in 2022 to rehabilitate the Dome-Kwabenya–Brekuso–Kitase road.
To facilitate the project, the chiefs and elders of Brekuso provided land for the company to use as a temporary site and accommodation for workers.
However, Nana Odei Leebi II lamented that work on the project was abruptly halted less than a year after it began, leaving the road in an even worse state than before.
The protesters are calling for First Sky Construction to vacate the allocated land and are urging the government to promptly resume construction on the abandoned road project.
Frustrated drivers also shared their grievances, stating that the poor road conditions are damaging their vehicles and driving up maintenance costs.
