The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed plans to roll out an HIV preventive drug in 2026, as part of its strategy to curb the spread of the virus, which saw over 15,000 new infections last year.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 30, the Commission’s Director-General, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, said the initiative aims to enhance prevention efforts and promote local pharmaceutical production.

“As a country, we’ve made the preventive vaccine a central part of our HIV strategy. While we’ll initially import it, local pharmaceutical firms are already positioning themselves to begin domestic production,” Dr. Akanbong stated.

He added that collaborations with pharmaceutical companies are already underway, with support from GIZ (the German development agency), to ensure a sustainable rollout.

“With GIZ’s support, we’re on course. By late 2026 or early 2027, we expect to begin producing the vaccine locally in Ghana,” he said.
