The government has unveiled plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to strengthen the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve public transportation nationwide.
Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, describing the initiative as part of the government’s broader agenda to revitalise public transport and support Ghana’s economic transformation.
According to the Minister, the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive early next year, marking the initial phase of the rollout.
Mr. Nikpe explained that Metro Mass Transit’s current fleet—just 134 operational buses—has made it difficult for the company to sustain operations, expand routes, and meet rising demand for affordable and reliable transport services.
Responding to questions from Members of Parliament, he said the new procurement aligns with a wider plan to modernise terminal infrastructure, enhance service delivery, and create additional jobs within the transport sector.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to inform this House that the company is in the process of acquiring about 500 new buses, to be delivered over the short to long term, to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
“These buses will be deployed across the country to optimise existing routes and open up new ones in underserved communities.”
He added that Metro Mass Transit is also working to operationalise aspects of a 24-hour economy, beginning with its vehicle maintenance and traffic management units, to ensure buses remain available and roadworthy at all times.
