The Government of Ghana is considering a bilateral arrangement with Colombia that would allow Ghanaian teachers to travel there to support English language instruction. This proposal was announced by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang during a courtesy call on the Presidency by Colombian Vice President Francia Elena Márquez Mina, who is in Ghana for a three-day visit to deepen cooperation between the two countries.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang explained that the longstanding programme through which Colombia sends Spanish instructors to Ghana could be expanded into a reciprocal exchange.

“Ghana deeply appreciates Colombia’s continued support in promoting Spanish language education—a programme that has strengthened institutional capacity and enhanced cross-cultural understanding,” she noted.

Referencing the recent graduation of the 12th cohort of Spanish language trainees, she expressed optimism about expanding the partnership: “I suggested that we extend this collaboration by sending English teachers from Ghana to Colombia as well.”

She also highlighted the broad scope of cooperation between the two countries, which includes immigration, agriculture, political consultations, air services, education, technical assistance, sports, and youth development.

“Our two nations have signed agreements and are jointly implementing projects in many areas,” she said, encouraging both sides to explore new opportunities—especially in trade, cultural exchange, and tourism—to drive economic growth and mutual benefit.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further noted Colombia’s global strengths and Ghana’s emerging potential: “Ghana values Colombia’s expertise in biodiversity-based innovation, creative industries, and agro-processing, while Colombia can tap into our vibrant investment climate and expanding markets in agriculture, energy, and services.”

As part of the visit, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) hosted a business seminar for a Colombian commercial delegation accompanying Vice President Márquez Mina to strengthen investment relations and broaden cooperation.
