Free Primary Healthcare to Launch in 2026

  • Free primary healthcare to start January 2026, per Health Minister Akandoh
  • Initiative aims to promote early detection and preventive care
  • Only 56% of Ghanaians currently enrolled in NHIS

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government’s much-anticipated free primary healthcare programme is set to launch by January 2026.

Speaking at the 23rd Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Medical Superintendents’ Group in Kwahu-Nkwatia in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, October 14, the Minister said the initiative is a major step toward universal health coverage, with a strong focus on preventive care, early diagnosis, and disease management.

“As we work towards universal health coverage, cost remains one of the biggest barriers. Despite the existence of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), only about 56% of Ghanaians are enrolled, with many in underserved areas left out,” Mr. Akandoh noted.

He explained that the free primary healthcare policy is designed to eliminate financial obstacles and enhance healthcare access, particularly in rural and vulnerable communities.

“The policy aims to ensure that primary healthcare is available at no cost nationwide. This will help us shift the focus to preventive healthcare, allowing for early detection and effective treatment,” he added.

The Minister also highlighted plans to retool health facilities across the country, echoing earlier commitments made by the President. This, he said, will be a key component in ensuring the success and sustainability of the initiative.
