ECOWAS backs Ghana for 2027 AU Chairmanship

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed Ghana’s bid for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) for the year 2027.

This endorsement was formalised in recommendation C/REC.1/12/25, adopted at the Council’s Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session held on Thursday, December 12, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.

In the resolution, the Council recognised Ghana’s notable contributions to ECOWAS and its strong reputation within the international community. It also acknowledged Ghana’s official request for the support of Member States in its pursuit of the AU chairmanship.

The Council underscored the need to increase the representation of ECOWAS citizens in leadership roles within regional and international bodies, including the African Union. It also highlighted the importance of coordinated backing to protect and promote the region’s interests at the continental level.

As a result, the Council recommended that the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government adopt a unified stance in support of Ghana’s 2027 AU Chairmanship candidacy.

The recommendation was signed by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers.
