A 44-year-old driver, Stephen Namtey, has been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a man of a Kia Rhino truck at Amasaman Junction.

Namtey faces charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Although he pleaded guilty with an explanation, the presiding judge, Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, ruling that his explanation amounted to a legal defence. He is scheduled to reappear in court on September 18.

Prosecuting the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye told the court that the complainant, Abdul Jalilu, a driver from Abossey Okai Zongo, had been searching for a vehicle when he spotted a Kia Rhino truck with a “for sale” sign and a contact number.

The truck’s owner, who is also a prosecution witness, had placed the sign on the vehicle in July. Jalilu contacted Namtey, who posed as the seller, and the two arranged to meet at Amasaman Junction for an inspection.

On August 30, Jalilu and his mechanic met with Namtey. After negotiations, they agreed on a price of GH₵85,000. Namtey received the payment and handed over the truck’s documents. He then asked to accompany Jalilu to Suhum, a request Jalilu accepted.

During the journey, three men stopped the vehicle. Namtey allegedly persuaded Jalilu to pick them up, claiming they were his colleagues. Once the vehicle stopped, Jalilu and his mechanic were forcibly removed from the truck—with Namtey’s alleged assistance. The suspects then drove off with the vehicle.

Namtey was arrested on September 9 and found in possession of the stolen truck. During police interrogation, he admitted meeting Jalilu but denied selling the vehicle.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend Namtey’s accomplices, who remain at large.
