Economist and political risk expert Dr. Theophilus Acheampong has been named a Technical Advisor at Ghana’s Ministry of Finance, bringing extensive experience that has influenced policy debates in Ghana and internationally for over a decade.
A familiar voice in Ghanaian media, Dr. Acheampong has consistently provided evidence-based analysis on the economy, governance, and public finance. Many see his new advisory role as a natural progression of the insights and guidance he has already offered in boardrooms, classrooms, and international policy forums.
With a career spanning more than 15 years at the intersection of energy, extractives, public finance, and political risk, Dr. Acheampong has led or co-led over 60 consultancy projects across Africa and beyond. His work has guided development finance institutions, international agencies, private equity firms, and multinational corporations, with a focus on economic modelling, integrity risk assessments, and sustainable development, helping decision-makers navigate complex economic landscapes.
Academically, Dr. Acheampong holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen, where he specialized in upstream fiscal regimes and energy systems modelling. He also earned an MSc in Energy Economics and Finance from Aberdeen and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from KNUST. He is currently pursuing an MSc in Taxation at Oxford University’s St Hugh’s College, further enhancing his expertise in public finance.
In education, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen (UK), as well as the University of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources. His academic work reflects his commitment to shaping future leaders in economics and policy.
Dr. Acheampong’s influence extends globally. He is a non-resident fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (Germany) and IMANI Centre for Policy and Education (Ghana), and serves on the boards of Natural Resource Governance Institute-UK and the African Council (UK). In the private sector, he is Head of Research and Markets at the Critical Minerals Africa Group, connecting African governments, investors, and global stakeholders in the critical minerals sector.
Known for his clarity and communication skills, Dr. Acheampong’s analyses have been featured in BBC, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg, and he has published extensively in journals, reports, and edited volumes, translating complex economic issues into actionable insights.
