Dr. Nii Moi Thompson Backs Ban on MPs as Ministers

Story Highlights
  • Dr. Nii Moi Thompson supports the CRC proposal to bar MPs from serving as ministers
  • The proposal seeks to strengthen parliamentary oversight
  • Separation of roles would reduce conflicts of interest

Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Senior Advisor to the President on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Chair of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has thrown his support behind the Constitution Review Commission’s (CRC) proposal to prohibit Members of Parliament from being appointed as ministers.

The CRC is advocating a clearer separation of powers between the Executive and Parliament, arguing that barring MPs from serving as ministers would enhance parliamentary oversight and minimise conflicts of interest.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday, January 7, Dr. Thompson described the current arrangement as problematic and said he agreed with the recommendation.

He cited instances where individuals simultaneously held multiple roles—such as MP, minister, and other positions—leading to overextension and poor performance. According to him, separating the roles of MP and minister would mark a significant improvement in governance.

Dr. Thompson further noted that overlapping responsibilities contribute to inefficiencies within government, adding that addressing these structural challenges would create space for more effective and productive public administration.
