The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has commenced the demolition of the Darkuman slum market to pave the way for the construction of a modern trading facility in the area.

The exercise, which began at dawn, resulted in the demolition of over 140 makeshift structures. Many affected traders and residents were seen sifting through the rubble in an attempt to recover their belongings and assess their losses.

The Assembly stated that prior notice was issued to all occupants; however, some traders failed to comply with the directive to vacate the premises before the scheduled demolition.

Municipal authorities explained that the initiative is aimed at decongesting the area and enhancing trading conditions once the new market is completed.

Officials have also given assurances that traders affected by the demolition will be given priority in the allocation of spaces in the new market facility.
