The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ayawaso North, Haruna Mohammed Awal, has appealed to parents and guardians to keep children out of labour and instead focus on their education and overall well-being.

He made the remarks during a public sensitization campaign organized by the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly in partnership with the Municipal Education Directorate.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of child labour and drew participation from key stakeholders across the municipality.

“Children deserve to grow up in safe environments where their rights are upheld. We must reject child labour and promote education—that is the only way to secure their future,” Mohammed Awal told Adom News.

He stressed the urgent need to shield children from exploitative practices that stunt their development and limit their life opportunities.

Also speaking at the event, Rosemond Aboagyewaa Opoku, Senior Social Development Officer at the Assembly, emphasized the need to expand public education on child labour nationwide.

“Eliminating child labour requires consistent advocacy and broader national campaigns. We must intensify public education to tackle its root causes and protect our children,” she said.

Opoku further called for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and penalties for individuals who engage in child labour, denying children their right to education and a safe upbringing.

The awareness campaign forms part of the Assembly’s larger commitment to promoting child welfare and ensuring that children’s rights are upheld within the municipality.
