Amin Adam Criticises NDC Over Energy Debt Claims

- Dr. Amin Adam accuses NDC of over-publicising routine fiscal actions
- US$1.4bn energy debt payment described as not new
- Warns against misleading the public through selective information
Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has criticised the NDC government for what he describes as excessive public relations around routine fiscal responsibilities, particularly the settlement of energy sector debts.
The Karaga Member of Parliament said the government’s announcement of a US$1.4 billion payment toward energy sector liabilities has been framed as a major accomplishment, despite similar payments having been made by the previous administration without public fanfare.
According to Dr. Amin Adam, the payment is not unprecedented and should not be portrayed as a special intervention unique to the current government.
“The NDC government turns everything into PR. Paying US$1.4 billion in energy sector debts is nothing new,” he said, adding that such payments are a standard feature of prudent public financial management, not a basis for political celebration.
He further noted that official government records undermine the narrative being advanced by the NDC.
“As stated in the 2025 Budget presented by the NDC government itself, the previous NPP administration settled US$1.4 billion of energy sector debts in 2024 without drawing attention to it,” he explained, emphasising that these facts are clearly documented in budget statements submitted to Parliament.
Dr. Amin Adam urged governments to prioritise transparency, consistency, and sustainable solutions to the energy sector’s challenges, rather than what he described as propaganda.
He warned that selective disclosure of information could mislead the public and weaken objective evaluations of economic management across different administrations.
