Akwatia votes today in a crucial by-election

- Constituency seen as a swing and key test for 2028 elections
- Global InfoAnalytics poll puts Bediako ahead with 53%
- NPP’s Solomon Asumadu faces off against NDC’s Bernard Bediako
The highly anticipated Akwatia by-election is taking place today, September 2, 2025.
This election was triggered by the death of Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, on July 7, leaving the seat vacant.
Akwatia, a traditional swing constituency, is considered a critical battleground and an important indicator for both major political parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The race is between Solomon Asumadu of the NPP and Bernard Baidoo Bediako of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Both candidates have expressed confidence in their chances, though a recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics suggests Mr. Bediako is the frontrunner.
The poll, conducted from August 27 to 28 and sampling 2,050 voters, shows Bediako leading with 53% support against Asumadu’s 47%.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has pledged a smooth and transparent electoral process, with the Ghana Police Service deploying 5,500 officers to ensure law and order.
