In a prestigious ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (Honoris Causa).
This accolade highlights his significant contributions to science education and healthcare advancement in Ghana.
During his acceptance speech, President Akufo-Addo expressed deep gratitude and humility, noting that this honor reflects not only his personal accomplishments but also the collective efforts of his administration and the support of the Ghanaian people.
He acknowledged that this recognition adds to his impressive collection of honorary degrees from renowned institutions such as the University of Fort Hare, University of Liberia, University of Cape Coast, University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, and Valley View University.
The President underscored the pivotal role of education in national progress, particularly emphasizing science education’s impact on innovation and economic development. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities through initiatives like the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which has notably boosted secondary school enrollment and promoted STEM subjects.
“By eliminating financial barriers, over 5.7 million students have gained access to secondary education, many of whom are pursuing science courses,” President Akufo-Addo noted. He explained that the policy’s goal is not only to increase enrollment but also to ensure high-quality education that prepares students for contemporary challenges.
Under his leadership, several programs have been introduced to advance STEM education, including the creation of STEM high schools, laboratory upgrades, and investments in teacher training. The construction of 186 new science laboratories under the STEM Education Enhancement Programme, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, was highlighted as a significant initiative to support hands-on learning.
President Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the progress made in healthcare under his administration, citing the construction and equipping of polyclinics, the extensive renovation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, and the establishment of treatment centers nationwide. These advancements underscore the administration’s belief that a healthy population is crucial for national development.
He further addressed the ongoing Phase II expansion at UHAS, funded by a $60 million grant from the Chinese Government, which will enhance the university’s capacity to train more healthcare professionals and foster innovative research. The President expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government and other partners for their support.
In closing, President Akufo-Addo inspired UHAS students, urging them to pursue their aspirations with dedication, as their contributions are vital to Ghana’s future. To commemorate the occasion, he announced a personal donation of ten desktop computers and ten laptops to the university, aimed at bolstering its administration and operational efficiency.
The event was a celebration of President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to advancing education and healthcare in Ghana, reflecting a sense of pride and achievement for both the President and UHAS.
