The Damongo MP, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on Parliament’s Majority to reintroduce the Anti-LGBTQ Bill exactly as it was passed by the 8th Parliament, without any changes.
His plea comes after the Speaker suggested possible amendments to certain sections, which Abu Jinapor opposes.
Speaking in Parliament, he emphasized that the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill underwent extensive national consultations and was unanimously approved, and should now be restored in its original form.
“Bring the bill as it was passed. Don’t alter it. Ghanaians want a law that promotes proper sexual conduct and prevents LGBTQ,” he stated.
Although the bill was passed, it was not assented to before the previous government’s term ended. The current NDC administration plans to reintroduce it, reportedly with some modifications.
Abu Jinapor, Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, warned that changing the bill would undermine the legislative process and disregard Ghanaian moral and cultural values.
His comments have reignited debate over the controversial legislation, with civil society, faith-based groups, and international partners divided. All eyes are now on how Parliament’s Majority will respond to his call.
