Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that 169 Ghanaians have been deported from the United States since January 2025, with an additional 120 awaiting final immigration decisions.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 20, the Minister stated that a total of 388 Ghanaians have been detained in the U.S. this year for immigration-related issues.
He explained that 120 individuals are awaiting rulings from the Board of Immigration Appeals, while 49 have exhausted all legal avenues and are pending final deportation arrangements.
“According to the Ministry’s records, 169 Ghanaians have returned to Ghana since January 2025. Of these, 90 arrived unaccompanied on commercial flights, while 66 were deported on chartered flights under the supervision of ICE agents,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana has not requested any financial, logistical, or material support from the United States regarding these deportations.
In response to MPs’ questions, he clarified that the collaboration is purely humanitarian.
“The government of Ghana has not sought any monetary, logistical, or material assistance for this intervention. We are Pan-Africanists. These are fellow West Africans in distress, being detained and treated without dignity, and we cannot ignore their plight as Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana,” he stated.
