Father Andrew Campbell, a dedicated advocate for the marginalized in Ghana, fulfilled a lifelong aspiration when he shared a heartfelt moment with Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church.
The encounter, which occurred on May 27, 2024, marked a significant milestone for Father Campbell, who has spent over five decades tending to the needs of lepers in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview after the meeting, Father Campbell likened the experience to meeting a “saint.”
“I’ve always admired him. He embodies the values of compassion and humility that I strive to emulate in my own work with the marginalized,” Father Campbell expressed.
Despite facing obstacles in his journey to meet the Pope, Father Campbell remained resolute in his determination.
“He is a man of the poor, a man of the marginalized, and I have longed to meet him for years,” Father Campbell said. “So, I decided to embark on this journey to Rome to fulfill that dream.”
Reflecting on the encounter, Father Campbell described it as a moment filled with warmth and genuine empathy from Pope Francis.
“It was a brief yet profound conversation. The Pope listened attentively as I shared the challenges faced by the marginalized communities in Ghana, particularly the lepers and street children,” Father Campbell recounted.
During their discussion, Pope Francis offered words of encouragement, urging Father Campbell to persevere in his mission of compassion and service.
“He reminded me of the importance of not giving up, of continuing to bring love and hope to those in need, just as Jesus did,” Father Campbell said.
Recalling the encounter, Father Campbell emphasized the profound impact it had on him.
“Sitting with Pope Francis felt like being in the presence of a saint. His wisdom, compassion, and humility left a lasting impression on me,” Father Campbell reflected.
Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Saint Teresa of Kolkata, Father Campbell remains committed to his mission of alleviating the suffering of the marginalized in Ghana, embodying the spirit of love and service exemplified by Pope Francis.
