Dr. Adrian Alter has officially assumed his role as the new International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative for Ghana.
According to Joy Business, Dr. Alter began his duties on September 2, 2025, after arriving in Accra in August for a smooth transition from Dr. Leandro Medina, who concluded his three-year term the same month.
Dr. Alter has already started work on Ghana’s fifth programme review and is actively engaging with government officials on the IMF-supported programme. His focus includes tracking Ghana’s economic progress and ensuring key targets under the ongoing fourth review are met.
About Dr. Adrian Alter:
Dr. Alter is a Senior Economist at the IMF with over a decade of experience in finance, economic policy, and development. He has contributed to IMF programmes in Ghana, Serbia, Tunisia, and other countries, helping address issues like financial stability, inflation, and sovereign debt.
Before joining the IMF, he held roles at the European Central Bank (ECB), Deutsche Bundesbank, and UBS Investment Bank.

- 2013: PhD in Quantitative Economics and Finance (magna cum laude), University of Konstanz, Germany

Role and Priorities in Ghana:
Dr. Alter will coordinate the IMF’s programme in Ghana, oversee progress on tax reforms, and act as the Fund’s official representative and spokesperson. He will collaborate with the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Ghana, and civil society to help sustain macroeconomic stability and support Ghana’s long-term development goals.
