Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says his focus is on selecting the best players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, regardless of whether they play locally or abroad.
His recent squad for the final round of qualifiers included two Ghana Premier League players: Benjamin Asare of Hearts of Oak and Prince Owusu of Medeama, both of whom featured during the international window.
While there have been public calls to include more home-based players in the national team, Addo insists that performance and quality — not location — will be the deciding factors.
“In general, I don’t think we should focus on who is local and who is not,” he told Joy Sports.
“We have to assess performance. The best players should be selected — local or foreign-based, it doesn’t matter. The stronger the group, the more they push each other to improve.”
As part of their preparations for the 2026 tournament, the Black Stars will face Japan and South Korea in international friendlies next month during an Asian tour.
