Chelsea Signs Pedro On 8-year Deal

Joao Pedro is set to feature in Chelsea’s Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Palmeiras after completing a £60 million move from Brighton.

The Brazilian forward has signed an eight-year deal and traveled from Brazil to the U.S. to finalize his medical. He is now eligible to play in Saturday’s match (02:00 BST) in Philadelphia.

Pedro, who came through the youth system at Fluminense, scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for Brighton after joining from Watford in 2023 for just under £30 million—a then-record fee for the Seagulls.

“Everyone knows Chelsea is a massive club with a rich history,” Pedro said. “They’ve had great players in the past and still do. As a Chelsea player, there’s only one mindset – to win.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also had a £55 million offer accepted by Borussia Dortmund for English winger Jamie Gittens. However, Gittens is ineligible for the Club World Cup, having already played in the competition for Dortmund.

The Blues previously registered Liam Delap, Mamadou Sarr, and Dario Essugo ahead of the tournament’s group stage.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler commented on Pedro’s departure, saying:
“This move works out well for everyone. It’s a strong deal for the club and a good return on our investment, especially with the depth we have in attacking areas. For Joao, it’s a chance to play Champions League football and strengthen his place in the Brazil national team ahead of next year’s World Cup.”
