The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the final voter register will be available in October, and political parties will receive copies before printing begins. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC emphasizing transparency and cooperation with stakeholders.
The EC has resolved all concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the voter register, making their request for a forensic audit premature. Dr. Asare encouraged the NDC to engage in discussions and present their issues, assuring that the EC has robust procedures in place to ensure a credible register.
Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, William Atuguba, criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointment of EC members perceived as sympathetic to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). Atuguba deemed these appointments unfair and questioned their impartiality.
Dr. Asare addressed concerns about public trust in the EC, stating, “We don’t need you to trust us as individuals, trust us as an institution”. He emphasized the EC’s commitment to fairness and transparency.
The NDC has been vocal about alleged irregularities in the provisional register, including unidentifiable voter data and illegal transfers. However, the EC maintains that these issues have been resolved through established legal and administrative processes.
The EC outlined its comprehensive process for preparing the final voter register, including registration, exhibition, and verification stages. This process ensures the accuracy and integrity of the register.
Dr. Asare reiterated that the EC has largely resolved discrepancies identified in the provisional register. The commission invites the NDC to engage in discussions to demonstrate the resolution of these issues.
The NDC organized a nationwide demonstration on September 17, demanding an audit of the register. National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia emphasized the need for a credible register to ensure free and fair elections.
The EC assured stakeholders that it will deliver its mandate, ensuring a transparent electoral process. Dr. Asare’s statements aim to reassure the public of the EC’s commitment to fairness and integrity.
