Opemsuo outlines background of Asantehemaa Nana Yaa Akyaa II

Opemsuo has published a biographical account of Asantehemaa Nana Yaa Akyaa II, outlining her family connections, education, professional life and support for vulnerable people before her selection to the Kusi Amoa Stool.

According to the Manhyia-focused publication, Nana Yaa Akyaa II was born Odehyie Ama Bonsu, christened Margaret Siribour, on 3 June 1946. The biography places her early upbringing at Ahenboboano in Ashanti New Town, Kumasi, while noting that she also spent school holidays visiting relatives in Konongo.

The account links her maternal family to Nana Akua Bakoma, identified as the mother of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II. Her father, Daniel Kwame Bonah Siribour, was described as a son of Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siribour I.

Education and work

Opemsuo says she attended Government Girls School, also known as Yaa Achiaa Girls, from 1952 to 1957, followed by Mmofraturo Girls’ Boarding School between 1958 and 1961. She completed her secondary education at St Louis Girls’ Senior High School from 1961 to 1966 and later received typing training.

Before taking up the stool, the biography says she worked at Queensway Bookshop in Kumasi and later at Kingsway Stores, including after moving to Accra following her marriage to the late civil engineer Kwame Afriyie. It adds that she subsequently managed West End Hotel at Mataheko, Accra, and later returned to Kumasi, where she ran a multi-purpose business.

The publication also credits her with longstanding assistance to poor and vulnerable people, including providing shelter at her Ashanti New Town apartments.

Opemsuo reports that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II selected her on 6 July 2026 to ascend the Kusi Amoa Stool. She assumed the stool name Nana Yaa Akyaa II and succeeded Nana Konadu Yiadom III as the 15th Queen of the Asante Kingdom, according to the biography.
