Asantehene urges Bank of Ghana independence

- Otumfuo Osei Tutu II calls for protection of the Bank of Ghana from political interference
- Describes the bank as a vital institution affecting every citizen
- Appeals to political actors to allow the Governor and his team space to work professionally
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for the Bank of Ghana to be protected from political interference, highlighting the need to preserve the central bank’s independence and credibility.
He made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Describing the Bank of Ghana as a vital national institution whose mandate impacts every citizen, the Asantehene urged political actors to exercise caution in their interactions with the central bank.
“This is a unique institution with a mandate that ultimately affects every citizen of the land. Ideally, this citadel should be a fortress, insulated from the strings and arrows of political conflict. Whatever actions we take, we should think carefully before doing anything that could compromise the integrity of the bank,” he said.
He appealed to both sides of the political divide to allow the Governor and his team the space, respect, and support to perform their professional duties without undue pressure.
“I call on the nation and both sides of the political spectrum to give the Governor—my son—and his team the opportunity, space, and respect to carry out their responsibilities. Support them in the right way. This is our bank; if they fail, we risk collapse; if they succeed, we achieve wealth and glory,” the Asantehene added.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed confidence in the Bank of Ghana’s leadership, stating that he believes the institution is capable of fulfilling its mandate in the interest of national economic stability and growth.
