Story Highlights
  • Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to submit detailed report to President Mahama on Bawku mediation
  • Mediation started in April 2025 to resolve decades-long chieftaincy dispute
  • Talks resumed after a brief pause, easing tensions in the area

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is scheduled to present a comprehensive report on the Bawku peace mediation to President John Dramani Mahama today, December 16, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure lasting stability in the region.

Otumfuo, appointed earlier in 2025 by President Mahama, was tasked with leading mediation aimed at resolving the long-standing chieftaincy dispute that has affected the Bawku municipality for decades. The mediation process began in April, with the Asantehene holding separate consultations with leaders and representatives of the rival factions to establish dialogue and build trust.

Although the talks experienced a short pause, they resumed in May 2025 and have since contributed to a period of relative calm in the previously volatile area.

The report to be submitted to the President is expected to detail progress achieved, identify key challenges, and provide recommendations to guide the next phase of government action toward sustainable peace in Bawku. Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have reinforced their security presence in the area to maintain law and order as the mediation continues.
