Election 2024: David Apasera Denounces PNC Congress Results

Story Highlights
  • Apasera claims the PNC's congress election was fraudulent and unfair
  • Bernard Mornah was officially announced as the PNC flagbearer with 1,138 votes
  • Samson Asaki Awingobit was elected as the PNC National Chairman

David Apasera, Chairman and prospective flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has fiercely contested the outcomes of the party’s 2024 National Congress, which aimed to elect new national executives in preparation for the December 7 general elections.

The congress, held on September 7, was marred by delays due to an injunction from Apasera’s faction. Despite the setbacks, Bernard Mornah was declared the flagbearer by Electoral Commission officials, securing a substantial 1,138 votes out of those cast.

In a press conference on Sunday in Accra, Apasera accused the Electoral Commission of overseeing a flawed and biased election, disregarding the Accra High Court’s injunction.

He alleged that there was a conspiracy between Bernard Mornah and the Electoral Commission to undermine his candidacy and hinted at possible legal action to contest the results.

“For all practical purposes, the election held yesterday was fraudulent, skewed, and cannot be considered free and fair. Article 55 (4) of the 1992 constitution stipulates that political parties must adhere to a national calendar. This implies that a political party cannot proceed with elections and have results declared if some regions have not participated,” Apasera stated.

He highlighted that the Western and Northern regions, among others, did not vote, leading to a significant discrepancy in the process. “It’s disheartening that we face such a situation, with the Electoral Commission failing to ensure an inclusive and fair election,” he added.

In other PNC news, Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, was elected National Chairman of the PNC, defeating Hajia Hajara with 893 votes to her 460 out of a total of 1,382 votes cast, with 1,353 deemed valid and 29 rejected.
