Ghanaian rapper Medikal has paid a condolence visit to the Chief of Sowutuom, Nii Osabu Akwei Ofoli I, in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred during the recent Homowo festival.
The violence, which broke out during a dispute over the traditional sprinkling of kpokpoi, claimed the lives of three individuals, including the chief’s son, popularly known as ‘Governor’.
During the visit, Medikal—who hails from Sowutuom—described the incident as deeply painful and extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. He also took the opportunity to apologize to the chief and elders for his long absence from the community, acknowledging Sowutuom’s pivotal role in his personal and artistic journey.
“Sowutuom means everything to me. I had been discussing development plans with the late prince, so his passing feels very personal,” Medikal stated.
He assured the chief of his readiness to support future development initiatives in the community, particularly those aimed at preserving the legacy of the late prince.
This visit comes in the aftermath of violent clashes that disrupted this year’s Homowo celebrations. According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the conflict stemmed from tensions between two rival chiefs’ supporters regarding the ceremonial sharing of kpokpoi. The dispute escalated into gunfire, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries.
Police say they have begun intelligence-led operations to arrest those involved in the violence.
