Fancy Gadam Expresses Frustration Over GH₵374 Royalties from GHAMRO

Ghanaian Afrobeat musician Fancy Gadam has revealed that he recently received GH₵374 in royalties from the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO). In an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio, Fancy Gadam shared his confusion regarding the timing and criteria of the payment.

During the interview, which aired on Saturday, Fancy Gadam explained that he had previously received GH₵102 in royalties, and after publicizing this amount on social media, he received an additional GH₵272 days later. “They sent me GH₵102 and after I posted it on my status, and then when my boss saw it he then posted it and yesterday [Friday, August 3] they sent another one. They sent me GH₵272,” he said.

He added that he is unsure about the specific period covered by these payments, noting that it has been a year since he last received any funds from GHAMRO. “I don’t even know the period of this payment. It’s been a year since I received money from them,” he stated.

Fancy Gadam also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity on how these royalties are determined. “So you will usually be there, and then they just sent you a token for royalties. And I don’t understand because, looking at what I have brought out this year, I know my songs are everywhere in Ghana, especially the competition album that I dropped. Looking at the streams out there,” he said.

The artist further criticized the payment amount, comparing it to his past earnings. “And I have been paying a lot of things before doing my concerts, like VAT, I constantly pay VAT so I don’t understand why they are giving me this token. Is this the only thing I deserve from GHAMRO? The last time they paid me it was GH₵1,800 or so,” he added.

GHAMRO, established under Section 49 of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005, and regulated under L.I. 1962 of 2010, is responsible for collecting and distributing royalties on behalf of authors, composers, and other rights holders.
