Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy has responded to criticism over his recent comments about not begging anyone to be his fan, explaining that his remarks were taken out of context and were meant as a joke.

The Grammy winner faced backlash after a viral clip showed him saying he preferred fans who “have money,” a statement many interpreted as dismissive and disrespectful toward his supporters.

But in a series of emotional posts, Burna Boy pushed back, insisting the public misrepresented a private joke he made with his band.

He clarified the misunderstanding, saying:
“By the way, I was joking around with my band about something else—not even this situation. And y’all have twisted it again, saying ‘Burna Boy doesn’t love his fans.’”

Clearly frustrated, he opened up about dealing with personal struggles, emphasizing that he has never asked for sympathy. He said the least people could do is understand him—or simply leave him alone.

Burna Boy also criticized what he described as unfair media coverage, noting that his positive actions often go unnoticed while any perceived misstep is quickly amplified.

However, in a reflective follow-up message, he acknowledged that he may not always be right.
“I sincerely apologise if I’m wrong. I’m not always right, but I feel right about this… Anyway, I’m just human,” he wrote.
