Fred Amugi Urges Creatives in Government to Drive Sector Growth

Veteran actor Fred Amugi has urged creatives appointed to various government positions to take action and make the creative sector more productive.

In an interview with Doreen Avio, Fred emphasized the importance of creating plans to promote Ghana’s creative industry. He stressed that those now in power should address the issues they once criticized when outside government.

“This is the time to push for change and make it happen. Gone are the days when even getting a reporter to cover a play was a challenge,” he stated.

Fred also pointed out that, like developed countries, Ghana’s creative sector could compete globally if similar strategies are implemented. He noted that the concepts driving success in countries like the U.S., India, and Nigeria are rooted in the work of creatives telling stories that reflect nature.

He further encouraged creatives to work together in building a better future for the industry. “Everyone must contribute — especially talents like James Gardiner, Kafui, and others. This is our moment to turn the negative discussions into something positive,” he said.

Fred made these remarks at the launch of Ghana Must Go, an upcoming theatre production by Latif Abubakar’s Globe Productions.
