NPA chief calls for sustained investment in Ghana’s petroleum sector

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has called for sustained investment to support the expansion, modernisation and competitiveness of Ghana’s petroleum sector.

Speaking at the Ghana International Petroleum Conference in Accra, Mr Tameklo said investment by both the public and private sectors would be needed to develop the infrastructure, technology and skilled workforce required for Ghana’s long-term energy ambitions.

He said regulation should go beyond enforcing compliance, arguing that it should also build confidence, promote innovation and help facilitate responsible investment in the industry.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, said global energy markets had faced major disruption in recent years, including geopolitical tensions, supply-chain constraints, price volatility, changing investment patterns and the continuing energy transition.

According to the minister, such developments have altered how countries approach energy security. He said resilience should be developed before a crisis through deliberate policies, strategic investment, innovation and strong partnerships.

Dr Jinapor described the downstream petroleum sector as a critical foundation of Ghana’s economy, saying it supports transport, industry, agriculture, mining and commerce, while also affecting the day-to-day lives of households.

He said a reliable and resilient downstream industry was important for energy security, economic competitiveness, industrial growth and national development.

The minister also commended stakeholders in the downstream petroleum value chain for their professionalism and commitment during a period of disruption in global energy markets. He said Ghana maintained the availability of petroleum products across the country despite the pressures, allowing businesses, industries and essential services to continue operating.

The remarks placed investment, regulatory confidence and supply resilience at the centre of the discussion on the sector’s future as Ghana navigates wider changes in global energy markets.
