Vice President Visits Sports Ministry, Reaffirms Support for Sector

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday paid a working visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, reaffirming government support for the sector and underscoring the critical role of sports and recreation in Ghana’s national development.

During the visit, the Vice President was briefed on ongoing programmes and recent achievements of the Ministry, reiterating her commitment to building a vibrant and sustainable sports ecosystem across the country.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, outlined key milestones made in the areas of safety, governance, and funding. He noted that following the death of a football supporter, the Ministry suspended the Premier League, conducted comprehensive safety audits, and established a dedicated Sports Police Unit to enhance security at sporting venues.

He also explained that after the death of boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju, the Ministry reviewed and strengthened boxing regulations and introduced national medical protocols to improve athlete welfare.

In addition, the Ministry cleared more than US$904,000 in outstanding salary arrears owed to Black Stars technical staff, while Parliament passed the Ghana Sports Fund Bill to support sports infrastructure and long-term development.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang commended Mr Adams for his effective leadership over the past year and emphasised that public service is fundamentally about service to humanity. She stressed the need for a proactive approach in addressing the needs of citizens and pledged her support, particularly in ensuring the timely release of logistics and resources to enable the Ministry to carry out its mandate.

She further highlighted the contribution of sports and recreation to Ghana’s economy, noting their importance to national development, social cohesion, and economic growth. Her remarks expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s sports industry.

The Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah, expressed appreciation for the Vice President’s visit, describing it as a morale booster for management and staff to remain committed to their work.

The visit underscores the government’s resolve to strengthen the sports sector through collaborative leadership, ensuring that Ghana’s sporting talent is nurtured and showcased on the global stage.
