Workers at the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) are demanding the immediate removal of Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), accusing him of mismanagement and neglecting to involve key stakeholders.

The call came during a protest by the workers’ union on Monday, February 9, where demonstrators criticized Mr. Ankrah’s leadership, calling it both incompetent and authoritarian.

The union argues that the CEO’s claims about VALCO being heavily indebted and in need of external investors are misleading and seem designed to facilitate the sale of the state-owned company.

Local Union Chairman, Samuel Watchman Agyeman, told the protesters that multiple attempts to engage Mr. Ankrah through dialogue had been disregarded, including a formal letter sent on December 18.

“He doesn’t listen to advice. He does what he wants, regardless of whether it’s right or wrong,” Mr. Agyeman said.

The union emphasized that VALCO has the potential to operate profitably without giving up control to external investors. They also expressed concern that the ongoing search for a strategic partner is, in fact, a covert attempt to sell a national asset and called for the process to be stopped in order to allow for a transparent evaluation of the company’s true operational capacity.
