Tensions are rising in the Ho Zongo community following opposition to Alhaji Muniru’s appointment as Volta Regional Chief Imam by a section of the youth.

His nomination by the Asogli State and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council has reignited a longstanding leadership dispute that began after the death of the former regional imam, Alhaji Hamza Danjuma.

A faction of the community is instead supporting the former deputy imam, Sheikh Alfa Anas, insisting he is the rightful successor.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, November 20, Abdul Rasak Abubakar, Vice Youth Leader of Ho Zongo, condemned what he described as political and traditional interference. He called on state authorities to act quickly to ensure fairness and restore calm.

“We, the members of the Ho Central Zongo community, pledge to resist any attempt by Alhaji Muniru, the so-called Volta Chief Imam, to lead prayers or congregations, as we do not recognize him as the legitimate Chief Imam,” he said.

He further warned that political involvement threatens the unity, stability, and peace of the community, urging both regional and national NDC leaders and state authorities to intervene and ensure fairness in the imamship process.

Mohammed Salisu Kidzah, Ho Zongo Youth Leader, emphasized the youth’s commitment to due process and warned against any intimidation by security agencies or traditional authorities.

“We stand for peace and are sending a clear message to the police and traditional leaders that intimidation will not be tolerated. Anyone attempting to take over the mosque on Friday should not try it,” he added.
