A teacher, Samuel Ofosu Amartey, has been granted bail of GHC100,000 with two sureties by the Amasaman Circuit Court in Accra over an alleged recruitment scam.
Presiding Judge Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed and earn at least GHC2,000 per month.
The court also directed Amartey to report to the Police investigator every Tuesday. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of defrauding by pretence and is scheduled to reappear in court on December 18.
Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah explained that the complainant, Eric Manteaw, is a professional teacher living in Asamankese, while Amartey is also a teacher residing in Jamestown.
In January 2024, the accused allegedly approached the complainant, claiming he could facilitate the recruitment of applicants into the Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana National Fire Service.
The complainant shared the information with relatives and acquaintances, gathering 19 interested persons who collectively paid GHC150,000, which was handed over to Amartey.
According to the prosecution, Amartey failed to fulfil his promise and subsequently went into hiding.
A complaint was later filed at the Amasaman Police Station, leading to his arrest and subsequent arraignment following investigations.
