A man suspected of stealing a vehicle was violently attacked by a mob at Awutu Bereku, located in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The suspect, identified as Ekow Abekah—a taxi driver from Gomoa Fetteh—is currently receiving treatment at the Awutu Bereku Health Centre.
According to Isaac Arhin, a friend of the car owner who spoke to Adom News, the incident occurred when the vehicle, registered GG 2658–20, was temporarily parked by the roadside. The owner had stepped away to make a Mobile Money transaction, while Mr. Arhin went to buy food. Expecting a brief absence, they left the keys in the ignition.
Unexpectedly, Ekow—who some describe as mentally unstable—allegedly entered the vehicle and drove off.
The theft triggered a chase by motorcyclists from Gomoa Ojobi, who caught up with the suspect between Awutu Bereku and Akoti. He was pulled from the vehicle and beaten severely by the mob. Eyewitnesses reported that he lost control of his bowels during the assault.
Mr. Arhin noted that the car’s windscreen and boot sustained damage during the incident.
The police later intervened, rescuing the suspect and transporting him to the health centre for medical attention.
Several residents have condemned the mob attack, noting that Ekow is a familiar figure in the Gomoa Fetteh community and may not have intended to commit a crime.
