- Ministry designates 6th September as National Sanitation Day
- Clean-up to be held monthly on first Saturdays in all 16 regions
- MMDCEs’ performance to be tracked; top performers rewarded
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has declared September 6th as National Sanitation Day under its new Clean-Up Ghana Agenda.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced that the nationwide clean-up exercise will be held on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions of Ghana.
He noted that the initiative will serve as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). According to the Minister, top-performing officials will receive recognition and rewards, while underperformers may face removal from office.
To support the initiative, the government has disbursed the common fund for MMDCEs to cover cleanup activities. A dedicated call center has also been established for the public to report sanitation concerns, and motorcycles have been distributed to enable regular patrols and ensure compliance.
John Desmond Sowah Nai, Dean of Municipal Chief Executives, affirmed their commitment to maintaining clean communities across the country.
