Ghana has recorded 628 robbery cases and 340 murders nationwide as of July 2025, pushing the government to introduce new measures to address rising crime.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak described the numbers as worrying, noting that they closely resemble last year’s figures.
“The statistics are not looking good at all. In 2024, we recorded 1,219 robberies and 552 murder cases. As of July this year, there have already been 628 robbery and 340 murder cases,” he stated.
Following consultations with the Ghana Police Service, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, other security agencies, traditional leaders, religious bodies, and civil society organisations, the government has introduced a Gun Amnesty Programme.
Describing the initiative as a “bold and compassionate step,” the Minister said the programme aims to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms and enhance public safety. It will allow individuals to hand over unlicensed weapons without fear of prosecution.
Minister Mubarak emphasized that the success of the initiative will depend heavily on public support and urged communities across the country to participate in efforts to build a safer Ghana.
