Legal practitioner Rashid Ibrahim has been elected as the 59th President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) following a highly competitive election at the 58th Annual NUGS Delegates Congress held over the weekend.

The election, conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner, brought together delegates from universities, colleges, and pre-tertiary institutions across the country.

According to official results released by the NUGS Electoral Commission, Lawyer Rashid Ibrahim secured 360 votes to clinch victory, ahead of Agirapah Opoku with 321 votes and Alvin Adjei Othcere with 289 votes. Other candidates included Latif Lawrence Jorhowie (260 votes), Asare Bediako (146), and Nazeer Saeed (6), out of a total of 1,382 valid votes cast.

His victory has been widely described as a renewal of hope and unity within the student movement, signaling the dawn of a purposeful and visionary leadership era for Ghanaian students.

A proud alumnus of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Rashid earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2023 and was called to the Bar in 2025. He is currently pursuing an LLM in International Business and Commercial Law at the same institution.

Throughout his academic journey, Rashid distinguished himself as one of the most influential and respected student leaders on campus. Known for his calm demeanor, intellectual depth, and dedication to service, he held several leadership and advocacy positions, earning a reputation as a principled and empathetic leader.

Rashid’s leadership philosophy emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and dialogue, fostering unity among students and building constructive relationships between student bodies and university authorities.

As he assumes office, the new NUGS President has pledged to strengthen the union’s institutional structures, enhance policy advocacy, promote digital inclusion, and create more leadership and career development opportunities for students across Ghana and beyond.

“The work of NUGS is far from over. We are inheriting a strong legacy, and my goal is to continue that progress — to make NUGS more vibrant, transparent, and impactful,” he stated after his election.
“I will lead with integrity and inclusiveness, ensuring that the voices of all students are heard, from basic school to tertiary level.”

With his election, Lawyer Rashid Ibrahim steps into leadership with a clear vision — to build a united, progressive, and student-centered NUGS that empowers the next generation of Ghanaian leaders.
