President Mahama Nominates Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice

President John Mahama has nominated Supreme Court judge Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice of Ghana.

His appointment, however, is pending parliamentary approval in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The nomination was officially confirmed in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 2025, following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He is currently the most senior among the nine justices on the Supreme Court bench.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was called to the Bar in 1981. His judicial career spans several decades, having served as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta, Bono Region.

He was elevated to the Court of Appeal before being appointed to the Supreme Court in June 2008 by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Notably, he was part of the Supreme Court panel that adjudicated and ultimately dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s 2012 election petition, which sought to annul around four million votes over alleged irregularities.
