- The killing sparked national outrage over police misconduct and gun violence
The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, also known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a seven-member jury found him guilty of murder by a 5–2 majority verdict.
Inspector Twumasi was convicted for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah — popularly known as Maadwoa — near her home at Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023. The tragic incident triggered national outrage and reignited public debate over gun violence and professional misconduct within Ghana’s security services.
Although Twumasi initially confessed to the shooting, he later claimed it was unintentional and entered a not guilty plea, prompting a full trial before the jury.
After nearly three years of proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025, sentencing the police officer to life imprisonment.
Family members of the late Victoria Dapaah filled the courtroom, expressing relief and gratitude at the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their continuous coverage, describing the ruling as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.
Background:
Victoria Dapaah, 26, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Twumasi, following a dispute over GH¢5,000. Prosecution investigations revealed that the officer had demanded repayment, and when Maadwoa failed to refund the money, he shot her near her residence — leading to her death.
