A 36-year-old armed robber, Stanley Afaku, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing a security guard at gunpoint at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.

Afaku, a Nigerian national, pleaded guilty to the robbery charge and was convicted by the Sekondi Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Naa Amberley Akowuah. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Afaku be deported by the Ghana Immigration Service upon completion of his jail term.

His accomplice, Samuel Nickson, also known as Egya Acquah, denied involvement in the crime and has been remanded into police custody. Nickson, who is already facing another robbery charge, is scheduled to reappear in court on June 24, 2025.

According to a statement issued by Superintendent of Police Olivia Awurabena Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Western Region, the incident occurred on February 23, 2025. Afaku and Nickson reportedly held the hospital’s security guard, Nash Arthur, at gunpoint, restrained him using his shirt, and stole his mobile phone.

The suspects then broke into the hospital’s OPD pharmacy and stole a flat-screen television.

Afaku was later arrested at the Esiama Bafana ghetto on June 4, 2025, following police intelligence. He confessed during interrogation and identified Nickson as his partner in the crime.
