Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that the government’s crackdown on organized street begging will soon expand to regions outside Greater Accra, following the recent arrest of over 2,200 foreign nationals.
In a Facebook post on Friday, May 16, 2025, the Minister shared that the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) apprehended 2,241 foreign nationals during an intelligence-driven operation in Accra.
The early morning operation aimed to dismantle syndicates behind the rising issue of organized begging on the streets of the capital. Among those detained were 909 adults and 1,332 children, including 961 males and 1,280 females.
Mr. Mubarak praised the efforts of GIS personnel, calling their work a vital contribution to national security. “I commend the GIS staff for their dedication to national security,” he wrote.
He also assured the public that similar operations will soon be carried out in other parts of the country. “I’ve heard calls for such actions in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other areas. Rest assured, this is a nationwide initiative that started in Accra and will soon be extended to other regions,” he said.
The Minister appealed to the public for continued cooperation during these operations, urging citizens to support the initiative. “Let’s work together to keep our streets safe,” he added.
