KNMP Backs Call to Rename Kotoka Airport After Dr Kwame Nkrumah

The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) has thrown its full weight behind calls to rename Kotoka International Airport in honour of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

In a statement issued on January 21, 2026, the Park backed a recent appeal by a group of concerned citizens, hailing Dr Nkrumah as the founder of Ghana and Africa’s leading Pan-Africanist.

KNMP noted that as the nation’s main international gateway, the airport should embody Ghana’s core values, ideals, and historical roots.

“Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s unmatched role in Ghana’s independence, nationhood, and Pan-African unity makes him the most appropriate figure to welcome the world to our cherished country,” the statement said.

The Park stressed that renaming the airport goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a moral necessity that ensures national honours align with truth, justice, and Ghana’s shared identity. It also pointed out the inconsistency of naming the airport after a figure linked to the overthrow of Dr Nkrumah, calling the situation disturbing and contradictory.

“This contradiction sends a dangerous message and promotes betrayal, subversion, and moral decay,” the statement added.

KNMP concluded by reaffirming its call for the airport to be renamed after Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whom it described as Ghana’s founder and the African man of the millennium.
