The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully intercepted 45 jerrycans of petrol being smuggled into Togo
. This operation, led by Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI) Richmond Wuntah Awuni of the Aflao Sector Command, was conducted following intelligence gathered during routine patrols at Pillar 12, an unauthorized route.
Although no arrests were made, the Head of Public Affairs for GIS, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Michael Amoako-Atta, highlighted that this interception aligns with a recent directive from Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) Kwame Asuah Takyi.
The directive calls for increased border patrols to counter terrorism and cross-border crime.
The team discovered the fuel hidden in an uncompleted building, poised for nighttime transport. ACI Amoako-Atta praised the team for their effective operation and noted that the seized fuel has been handed over to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
The patrol team will continue monitoring the area to catch those responsible for the smuggling attempt.
ACI Amoako-Atta also urged border residents to prevent their properties from being used in activities that could jeopardize national security.
Fuel smuggling has significantly impacted the petroleum sector in Ghana, affecting both distribution companies and consumers. In response, the NPA and state security agencies have intensified efforts to combat smuggling, particularly in the Upper East and Volta regions, through targeted operations.
