The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed that the company is losing approximately 73 million gallons of treated water every day in the Greater Accra Region.
In an interview with Citi TV, Mr. Mutawakilu attributed the significant losses to illegal connections, water theft, and faulty infrastructure.
“We produce about 140 million gallons daily in Greater Accra, but can only account for 67 million gallons. That leaves 73 million gallons unaccounted for each day,” he explained.
He also highlighted the company’s struggles with revenue collection, noting that even for the 67 million gallons accounted for, not all revenue is successfully recovered.
Nationwide, the situation remains troubling. According to Mr. Mutawakilu, only 48% of the total water produced is properly accounted for, with more than half either lost or going unbilled.
Describing the trend as unsustainable, he cautioned that continued losses at this scale are putting immense pressure on GWL’s finances and could jeopardize the company’s ability to maintain consistent water supply.
