Govt. Restrictions On Excavator Imports to Combat Illegal Mining

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has revealed that the government is considering imposing restrictions on the importation of excavators into Ghana.

This proposed move is part of broader efforts to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to severely damage the country’s environment and water resources. During a press engagement on Thursday, the minister expressed concern over the widespread environmental destruction caused by unregulated mining activities and stressed the need for strong, structural actions.

The minister pointed out that one of the key contributors to illegal mining is the unchecked importation of heavy-duty machinery, particularly excavators, which are often used in forest reserves and along riverbanks, leading to devastating environmental damage.

“We believe it’s time to restrict the import of excavators into the country. It’s illogical that excavators, one of the top three imports worth $6.2 billion, are brought here mainly to destroy our forests, water bodies, and ultimately, our future. This must end, and the process is already underway,” he said.

He clarified that the restriction would not affect legitimate businesses or construction companies but would focus on closing loopholes that have allowed mining machinery to be used for illegal activities.
