Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has described the recent public remarks by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as “deeply unfortunate.”

Justice Torkornoo, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, raised objections to the procedures surrounding her possible removal from office, claiming they violate established legal norms and reflect a political effort to oust her.

In response, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that President John Mahama has played no personal role in the matter and that all actions taken have strictly adhered to constitutional procedures.

“What has happened today is most regrettable. As a government—and particularly under President Mahama—we remain fully committed to upholding the rule of law. We cannot apply the Constitution selectively based on the individual involved,” he said.

The Minister stressed that the constitutional framework guiding the discipline and conduct of judicial officers is being fully observed in the Chief Justice’s case.

“Every Ghanaian is equal before the law. Just as our courts have held individuals accountable, members of the judiciary must also be subject to due process when allegations arise. That is exactly what is taking place,” he added.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also called for calm and restraint, urging all stakeholders to respect the constitutional process and refrain from politicizing the situation.
