Government urged to settle GBC electricity arrears

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has urged the government to intervene and settle an outstanding electricity debt of GH¢13.6 million, describing it as a legacy burden stemming from shared state infrastructure.

During President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the broadcaster, GBC Director-General Prof. Amin Alhassan explained that the debt accumulated during a period when multiple state institutions relied on a shared power system without individual metering.

He noted that when the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) later installed meters in GBC’s name, some agencies that had previously drawn power from the same system disconnected and switched to alternative sources, leaving the accumulated arrears solely under GBC’s responsibility.

Prof. Alhassan revealed that GBC has already paid approximately GH¢5 million this year but continues to struggle with the remaining balance, which is placing a significant strain on its finances.

He appealed to the government to clear the legacy debt, stressing that doing so would allow the public broadcaster to operate efficiently and fulfill its mandate without undue financial pressure.
